Katheryn Kelty Krzycki, painting professionally as Katheryn Davis, died Monday, September 14, 2009 after a brief but intensive battle with cancer. A private burial service was held at Pacific Sunset Cemetery in Florence. A Memorial Celebration of her life was held at the Florence Events Center on Sunday, October 25 with 325 in attendance.

She was born November 24, 1930, in Glendale, California to Frank and Dorothy Kelty Wilkinson. She graduated from Glendale High School in 1948 and attended several California universities and the Pasadena Museum of Art.

Katy was involved with drawing and painting since childhood. And later, as time permitted, she painted while raising her five children, usually painting in oils. She studied art with many professional teachers including renowned watercolor painter Rex Brandt who was a client of her father’s dental practice and a near neighbor. She began painting full time in 1987 when she married Leroy Krzycki, a retired rocket scientist.

Developing her own impressionist style in watercolor, oil and other media, she deliberately played down details to let the imagination of the viewer soar. She said, “I won’t put 10,000 feathers on a duck!” She held that “painting is like running away from home while staying in your house!” Katy attributed her talent to God.

As a member of the Watercolor Society of Oregon (WSO) since 1978, Katy held their highest competitive and honorary awards. The WSO honored her for her 30-year membership with a retrospective show of 26 selected paintings and a lecture attended by some 100 persons at their 43rd Annual Exhibition at the Florence Events Center in the fall of 2008.

Katy also loved to paint portraits and was a member of the Portrait Society of America and a member of the Figure 8 Portrait Group in Florence.

She held over 100 individual and group shows in her lifetime and has some 1,000 original paintings in private and commercial collections in the United States and abroad.  She was represented by commercial galleries throughout the United States as well as her own Quiet Waters Art Gallery on Sutton Lake north of Florence, Oregon.

Katy taught watercolor workshops in Oregon and California since 1977, teaching the principles of art so each student could develop their own style. She interspersed intensive teaching with amusing stories. She instructed five workshops in the Greek Isles and painted on location in Greece, Portugal, Italy, Nova Scotia, Tahiti, and Hawaii as well as many locations in the United States. She formerly had a studio overlooking the harbor at her vacation home in the lobster fishing village of Stonington, Maine.

Katheryn Kelty Krzycki is survived by her devoted husband Leroy, by her five children, Timm Davis, Kelty LaRocco and her husband John, Steven R. Davis, Tina Davis and her husband Steve Ives and Susan Dewberry and her husband Charley; three first cousins Dorothy Kelty, Patricia Phillips and Clark Tea; six grand children and 14 great grandchildren.
